Exploiting Fractures and Schisms
![]() As the disastrous effects of George W. Bush's presidency continue to compound themselves exponentially, fractures in the carefully constructed facade of conservative unity are becoming increasingly apparent. Major missteps such as Bush's Supreme Court nomination of Harriet Miers, the Dubai port scandal, the backlash against Donald Rumsfeld, or most recently the resignation of C.I.A. director Porter Goss are prominent examples of dissent within the GOP. However, the fractures run deeper in the party than a few isolated presidential policy decisions. Larger schisms are forming around ideological differences over such issues as reproductive rights and corruption , to name just a few. These fractures are ripe for exploitation by the left. One of the greatest conservative strengths is their ability to mobilize behind a common strategy despite their disparate interests and goals. Now that their numerous Achilles' heels are exposed, it's time to exploit these schisms and drive them apart even further. |
